As an incoming UNO student, it’s easy to get lost in all the services UNO offers its students.
Many begin at the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC). With its TV and vending area, it has become the perfect place on campus to unwind and study between classes. It also features a fireplace lounge with two adjacent student breakout rooms, which are cozy and intimate areas to study in between classes. The noise level can be high at times though, so it’s not ideal for doing high-quality classwork.
Various services for students, like the Women’s Resource Center, a student-run, multi-service agency that works on the UNO campus and around Omaha, are also in the MBSC.
International Student Services, American Multicultural Services and Network for Disability Awareness are all housed within MBSC, and welcome visitors who are curious about what they offer or have questions regarding their services. The bookstore, student government, Gateway offices and other student organizations are located in MBSC as well.
Student Health Services is located in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) building and provides students and faculty with medical services. Students can see the providers for free and receive any in-stock ,over-the-counter medication at no cost. Student Health Services is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Campus Recreation is also located in the HPER building. The recently renovated building includes two fitness centers, a 50-meter pool and indoor spa. It also has a 28-foot climbing and bouldering wall, indoor jogging tack, outdoor venture center and sports clubs. All of these services are free for students and faculty of UNO with a valid MavCard, and friends and family of students and faculty are also welcome for a fee.
The UNO theater is by far one of the best services on campus and offer amazing shows during the year. UNO students are able to get in free with their I.D., while other students can get in for $5. The box office is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts building.
Many students don’t realize that the library offers many services as well. The library café has a full menu, as well as Starbucks coffee. Laptops are available for check out, and single study rooms can be reserved for two-hour blocks of time. These rooms feature a quiet environment to study with no interruptions.
The library also offers group study rooms that can be reserved for three-hour blocks of time, all internet-ready. They’re equipped with presentation equipment and DVD/VHS players, if needed. If you are unable to book one of these rooms, the third floor is a designated quiet study space, so make sure to turn off your iPod and silence your phone.
One of the great things about being a student at UNO is that all the services are included within student fees. Students who’ve been here awhile can tell all incoming students that all you have to do is know where to look and there’s plenty to keep you occupied.
