Next week UNO will host the 2012 Show Choir Invitational, and the university’s vocal music department would like to invite everyone to attend.
The Show Choir Invitational will be held all day Wednesday, Feb. 15 and Thursday, Feb. 16. The events will feature 60 choirs from both middle and high schools. Each choir will compete for trophies and recognition in front of judges.
Matthew Harden, the director of Choral and Vocal Activities at UNO, said that one of the best things about this event is that it often works as a recruiting tool for the university.
“It creates a campus recognition,” Harden said.
Children, especially those who start coming to UNO in middle school, start to feel a familiar connection to the school.
“It starts to feel like home,” he said.
Harden became involved with the festival six years ago when he first came to UNO, but it’s actually been an annual event for over 10 years. Harden believes that what makes this such a unique event is the environment that this festival creates.
“It’s friendly, but it’s also competitive,” Harden said.
In fact, Harden said, the invitational is just a welcoming environment where a lot of schools come to try out their shows before moving on to bigger competitions around the country.
Wednesday’s performances will include Division B and Division C schools. Division AA and Division A schools will perform on Thursday. Divisions for each school are determined by how many students participate. The competitions will take place in the Recital Hall of Strauss Performing Arts Center.
