The University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) will be holding a Pet a Pup event from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Aug. 30 in Elmwood Park.

The UNO chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is partnering with Grief’s Journey and Midlands Pet Therapy to provide an educational and entertaining experience. Grief’s Journey is a local nonprofit that provides support for people going through grief of any kind. Midlands Pet Therapy is providing licensed therapy dogs.

The idea for the event began in a public relations class at UNO. Students gain experience by working with real world clients like Grief’s Journey, who wanted to increase exposure for their organization among college students.

Karen Weber, the faculty advisor for UNO PRSSA, believes that service learning components are an important part of the educational experience.

“Being able to give back to the community is so important and it’s a key mission of UNO,” Weber said.

She also expressed pride in her students’ work.

“There are so many nonprofits in Omaha that don’t have a big marketing budget, so to be able to help them is important,” Weber said.

Aug. 30 is National Grief Awareness Day and is during the first week of school.

Maya Solarana, a UNO student who worked on the event, said these were key reasons for choosing to hold the event that day.

“People are away from home for the first time,” Solarana said. “It’ll be a good way for people to learn about grief and make some friends.”
