The University of Nebraska Medical Center’s outdoor ice skating rink has a new attraction this season. Open to the public since Nov. 27, the rink has added concessions, music and seasonal decorations.

“The additions “make the atmosphere even more festive and help draw attention to the rink and make the site more visible,” said UNMC’s Media Relations coordinator Vicky Cerino.

Concessions include hot chocolate and cider, along with decorations such as lights above the rink, snowflakes and a snowman outside the skate hut.

The rink is a busy place during the holiday season.

“One day last weekend we had about 100 people,” Cerino said.

The rink will be open through March 13. It’s located east of 42nd Street between Emile Street and Dewey Avenue on the north side of the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education building.

Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

Free surface parking is available in Lot 39, located at 41st and Emile streets.

General admission, which includes skate rental, is $5 per person. Seasonal memberships, which also include skate rentals, are $30 per person or $60 per family of four or less.
