Salvation Army fan drive to help those in need

The Omaha Salvation Army and Westlake Ace Hardware stores are partnering to raise money to buy fans for needy customers trying to beat the sweltering heat.

From June 23 to July 10, all Omaha-area Westlake Hardware stores will collect donations to benefit those in need.

For every dollar raised during the two-week period, Westlake Hardware will purchase fans at cost for The Salvation Army so the agency can provide even more fans to local residents when demand is the highest.

Fans will be distributed by The Salvation Army to qualified senior citizens age 62 and older, families with infants under 6 months and the disabled with chronic illnesses, among others, to help them beat the heat.

Kickoff festivities for fan drive will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Westlake Ace Hardware near 140th Street and West Center Road. Enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn and cold drinks.

Westlake Ace Hardware will donate 50 box fans at the event. A monetary donation can be made toward fans at any area Westlake Ace Hardware locations.

“The fan drive is a great opportunity to help people in our local community,” said Sean Grant, manager of Westlake, in a press release today. “For every $5 donation one ‘fan blade’ will be given. For every $20 an entire fan will be donated to someone in need.”

During the kickoff event, Ozark BBQ Restaurant and Catering will be sell ribs and sauces. Cash only. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of the proceeds directly to the fan drive.
