The Omaha men’s soccer team opened up Summit League competition on Saturday night with a tie against IUPUI, 1-1.

Coming into the game ranked No. 23, Omaha looked to take care of business against an IUPUI team that has not yet recorded a win on the season.

Omaha did a great job of putting the pressure on the Jaguars early in the game. In the first half, the

MAvericks led in shots 7-1 and in shots on goal 4-0. One of these shots on goal ended up in the net, thanks to a corner from Emir Alihodzic that found its way to the feet of Logan Mendez, who hammered it home for the goal. Omaha closed out the half holding on to the 1-0 lead.

The second half saw stellar defense from both sides, as Omaha’s goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis and IUPUI’s Eduardo Cortes locked down their nets a majority of the period. However in the 78th minute, the Jaguars capitalized on their first chance of the game with a goal from Cristian Soto from 18 yards out.

Tied 1-1, Omaha and IUPUI went to two overtime periods, but neither team was able to net a game winner.

Despite leading the Jaguars 24-4 in shots and 14-1 in shots on goal, Omaha wasn’t able to capitalize on their many opportunities.

With the tie, Omaha is now 6-1-1, 0-0-1 in the Summit League. IUPUI is 0-5-3, 0-0-1 in the Summit League. Omaha plays its next conference match at home on Saturday, Oct. 3 against Fort Wayne.
