OLLAS Charla Series Starts Sept. 20
The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies at the University of Nebraska Omaha will kick off the 2011-2012 Charla series at noon Tuesday, Sept. 20, with a lecture by Dr. Maylei Blackwell in the Milo Bail Student Center Nebraska Room.
Blackwell’s UNO presentation will be based on her latest book, ¡Chicana Power! Contested Histories of Feminism in the Chicano Movement, published earlier this year by the University of Texas Press.
In the book, Blackwell retells stories Chicana feminism’s emergence in the student- and community-based organizations throughout southern California and the Southwest during the 1960s and 1970s.
The event is free, and open to the UNO community and the public.
The Charla (which means “chat” or “conversation” in Spanish) is part of several UNO events celebrating Latino Heritage Month, sponsored by OLLAS, Student Organizations and Leadership Programs, and the Student Cultural Programming Committee, according to the event’s press release.
48-Hour Outdoor Bounce-a-Thon is
The University of Nebraska Omaha Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity will sponsor Bounce-a-Thon – along with the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at UNO – Sept. 26 through Sept. 28 at the Pep Bowl.
Fraternity and sorority members will bounce for 48 consecutive hours on a trampoline outdoors at the Pep Bowl.
UNO students, faculty, staff and members of the community can purchase a ticket for the raffle or donate non-perishable food items or money in collection boxes at the Pep Bowl.
All food and money donated will be distributed to the needy of Omaha through the Omaha Food Bank.
Christensen to Present State-of-the-University Address Oct. 5 at UNO
University of Nebraska Omaha Chancellor John Christensen will deliver his annual state-of-the-University address at fall convocation Oct. 5.
Christensen is expected to discuss UNO’s efforts to bolster capacity, implementation of an enrollment management plan and strategic priorities across the campus. He will also discuss UNO’s recent enrollment numbers, the university’s priority on community engagement and campus accomplishments during the past year.
Convocation begins at 10 a.m. at the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. UNO faculty, staff, students and the public are invited to attend the free event. A reception at the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom will immediately follow Christensen’s remarks.
Divas of Diversity Drag Show Oct. 12
Maverick Productions will host the Divas of Diversity in the Milo Bail Student Center Nebraska Room at noon Oct. 12.
The Divas of Diversity presentation features stories of discrimination and acceptance, a powerful drag show performance and time for questions and answers.
The presentation encourages young people to come together to be educated, inspired and to create a conversation on their campus and in their community that embraces and supports differences.
Shangela is the featured diva for the Oct. 12 presentation. She has appeared on RuPaul’s “Drag Race,” the FX series “Terriers” and the ABC drama “Detroit 187.” She has performed a variety of comedy shows, and has appeared in the short film “Brody of a Barbie” on BET.
