Director of Student Organizations and Leadership Barb Treadway had trouble answering when asked which Welcome Week 2002 event should be considered the week’s highlight.
She decided: “Students love the free food.”
While free food is among students’ favorite Welcome Week festivities, there is much more to the week than that.
Just ask the 17 students and staff members of the Welcome Week Committee who have been planning the week’s events since April.
The members of the committee brought new events to the Welcome Week celebration this year, including Sunday’s kayaking in the HPER pool, Monday evening’s lifeguard training and today’s basketball hoop contest.
Also different this year is UNO Athletics’ Pep Rally being held in the afternoon as opposed to in the evening as it was last year.
Treadway was able to pick a few highlights other than the food.
“We’re going to have a lot of great bands,” she said.
She also said Psychic Suzanna’s Tuesday appearance and Thursday’s Clubs and Organizations Fair are don’t miss events.
This year’s welcome week is sponsored by the Milo Bail Student Center. Student Affairs staff members and UNO students also help supply the manpower needed to pull off the weeklong celebration.
Corporate sponsors Union Pacific and UPS also make contributions to make the week a fun and festive one.
Treadway said there has been a formal Welcome Week celebration at UNO for about 10 years now.
She said up until the three years ago the celebration was called Welcome Back Week, but was changed to Welcome Week so that first-year students were included in the title.
“Welcome Week is for everyone,” she said. “It’s for students, faculty and staff to join in the festivities, mix and mingle and get to know each other.
“We want it to be a happy, fun, festive environment so everyone can enjoy all of the activities.”
