The University of Nebraska at Omaha women’s volleyball team kicked off the 2015 Omaha Classic last Friday night in a dominating performance over North Dakota in their home opener. The Lady Mavs won in four sets by scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-19 and 25-18.

Three Mavericks led the way with double-double performances: Syd- ney O’Shaughnessy with 41 kills and 13 digs, Michaela Schimmer with 15 kills and 17 digs and Kelley Wollak with 14 kills and 20 digs.

The Mavs battled closely with North Dakota for the first two matches before a 11-3 opening run at the start of the third set really ignited the Mavericks for the rest of the match. North Dakota used a 7-0 run to get within three near the end of the match but the Mavs pulled away to win 25-19. They went on to win the fourth and final set to secure a match victory.

Unfortunately, the success the Mavs enjoyed Friday night against North Dakota didn’t transfer to their play Saturday in a couple tough losses to Drake University and the University of Central Florida.

The Mavs started their Saturday slate of games at the Sapp Field- house with a close loss to the Bull- dogs from Des Moines, Iowa. The Mavs lost 3-2 in five sets by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 28-30, 22-25, and 15-17.

UNO won the first set in domi- nating fashion, rolled to a second set win, but dropped the third set to the Bulldogs 28-30. This ignited a Drake comeback that was too much for the young Mavs as they dropped the final two sets to lose the match.

The Mavericks easily beat the Bull- dogs on the stat sheet, but that didn’t necessarily transition to the court.

Omaha as a team, outh- it Drake .200 to .162, out blocked them 12-10, and they had 12 aces to their five. This is the most aces for a Maverick squad since they posted 12 a different time in a 2012 match against Oakland.

Some interesting individual stats also came from the close loss. Two Mavericks had double-double per- formances: Michaela Schimmer had 13 kills with 11 digs while Kel- ley Wollak had 21 kills and also 11 digs.

Megan Schmale led the Mavs in kills with 17, and she also re- corded a match-high eight blocks. Libero Kimberly Bailey added 21 digs, while Mackenzie Horkey re- corded a season-high 17 digs. Sydney O’Shaughnessy also had a new season-best stat Saturday record- ing 50 assists in the match.

The night cap against Central Florida was a quick 3-0 loss for the Mavs by scores of 14-25, 21- 25, 11-25. Sydney O’Shaunessy earned her fourth double-double performance of the season with 24 assists and 12 digs.

Megan Schmale led the Mavericks with 11 kills.

The Knights outhit the Mavs .253 to .025, as they went 3-0 over the course of the weekend in the Omaha Classic.

The Lady Mavs now 2-4 on the year, will travel to Kansas City, MO this weekend for the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) Kangaroo Klassic.

The Mavs face Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) at 11 a.m. before taking on Bradley at 4:30 p.m. They’ll go up against host UMKC on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
