Melissa Doerr finished with a two-day score of 163 to lead the UNO women’s golf team to a 14th place finish at the Saluki Invitational at Southern Illinois. The Mavs finished the tournament with a combined team score of 666.
UNO’s 14th place finish was ahead of three other teams, and 10 shots clear of their next closest competitor IPFW. Host Southern Illinois won the tournament with a team score of 608. Second place Iowa was only as close as 10 strokes behind.
Doerr was also the leader for UNO in Monday’s second round. Her score of 81 was the best among five Maverick golfers.
Senior Rebecca Pollock and junior Elizabeth Havekost had UNO’s low rounds of the day for Sunday. The pair both shot 79s en route to leading the Mavs to 11th place in the first round of the tournament.
As a team, UNO shot a 328 on Sunday. Doerr finished the first round with an 82. Her two-day score of 163 was good enough for a tie for 42nd overall.
Pollock shot an 85 in the second day of competition, finishing just a stroke behind Doerr in 45th. Havekost’s Monday score of 87 gave her total of 166 for the tournament and put her in a seven-way tie for 49th.
Sophomore Brooke Thilges improved her Sunday score of 88 by three strokes to an 85 and finished in a tie for 78th. But Thilges wasn’t the only one to improve on a rough first round.
Junior Danielle Kuchar went from a 92 on Sunday to a 90 on Monday.
UNO’s next tournament starts Sunday at the IPFW Classic in Fort Wayne, Ind.
