Women’s basketball team on outside looking in

Head coach Lisa Carlsen and the Maverick women’s basketball team are staring at potential postseason elimination as UNO enters its weekend series against St. Cloud State and Minnesota State-Mankato.

UNO is in eighth place in the North Central Conference with a 5-8 record, 9-15 overall, one full game behind seventh-place Augustana (11-10, 6-5 NCC). Only the top seven teams in the conference advance to the postseason tournament.

Last weekend was an emotional ride for the Maverick women. After dropping a 58-38 decision to South Dakota Friday night, a Jen Mitchell 3-point buzzer-beater salvaged the weekend with an 85-84 win over Morningside Saturday.

The win put the Mavericks into eighth place in the NCC, a game out of the final post-season tournament berth with five games left. St. Cloud State has an 11-9 record (6-6 NCC) and currently sits in sixth position in the conference. The Huskies edged the Mavericks 69-66 in the last meeting on Jan. 12. MSM (9-12, 4-8) is ninth in the conference, one spot behind the Mavericks. UNO claimed an 88-84 win in Mankato on Jan. 11.

UNO will tip off against St. Cloud State tonight at 6 p.m. and against MSM Saturday at 6 p.m. Both games will be held at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
