With the end of the semester looming ahead, the next thing that might be on students’ minds is what to do over winter break. The wide variety of events and holiday specials at many restaurants, pubs and bars may sometimes make finding the best place to celebrate the end of the semester stressful.
Your dilemma might also continue depending on what group of friends you’re hanging out with and what frame of mind you’re in on a given evening. You might even be in the mood to bust out the old ugly Christmas sweater to wear to your favorite bar.
Whether you’re celebrating Kwanza, Hanukah, Christmas or planning on inventing a new holiday this winter break, you’re going to want to find the best and most affordable winter specials and holiday events out there.
Marylebone Tavern
3710 Leavenworth St.
Marylebone Tavern tops the list. With great food and drink specials regularly available, Marylebone is sure to be a perfect spot to kick back with some old friends and have a couple of drinks. Karaoke night is held every Thursday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with $1 Bush Lights.
A new special on Sundays welcomes UNO students who have their Mavcards. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., if you buy one burger and two drinks, the second burger will be discounted at $4. Also, if you are in the mood for wings, you can get 10 wings for 65 cents; and if you buy two drinks, you get six wings for free.
They also have 40 cent wings on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. To celebrate the New Year, Marylebone will have a New Year’s Eve party with free food and drink specials.
Alderman’s Bar
3216 Leavenworth St.
If you truly believe your ugly Christmas sweater is the best, your chance to prove it is right around the corner. Alderman’s will be having their ugly sweater contest on Dec. 20.
Their specials range from $2 tallboy cans, $2 house shots and $3 Fireball shots. Alderman’s will also be giving out gift certificates for the first, second, and third place winners of the contest. Don’t forget to bring a canned food item for a raffle ticket and a chance to win a Nebraska Cornhusker ugly sweater; all canned goods will be donated to the Sienna/Francis House.
Billy Frogg’s Bar & Grill
1120 Howard St.
Billy Frogg’s, located in the Old Market, has a line-up of specials almost every week of the night, ranging from $2 domestic beers on Tuesdays to $4 draws on Thursdays. To put your taste buds in the holiday spirit, they are also featuring a “fun shot.” The bartenders are keeping this one under wraps, but if you ask them, they might just say it tastes like “Christmas in your mouth.”
Billy Froggs will not be having a cover charge over the winter break. For New Year’s Eve, they will be having drink and food specials all day long in addition to shot girls featuring Goldschläger schnapps.
T. Henery’s Pub
318 S. 11th St.
Located in the Old Market, T. Henery’s will host at least two music events this winter break. On Dec. 27, T. Henery’s will be featuring DJ Jab. There will be a $5 cover charge and drink specials that night.
T. Henrey’s will also be hosting a New Year’s Eve party. Cover Me Bad, a local cover band that performs a wide variety of hit songs from the past three decades, will be ringing in the New Year at the pub. If you arrive before 9:30 p.m., there will be no cover charge—but if get there after that, you will be coughing up $15 to get through the door.
Crescent Moon Alehouse
3578 Farnam St.
For all you Oktoberfest fans, don’t put your German mugs away quite yet: the Crescent Moon will be hosting their MugClub Holiday Party on Dec. 17, starting at 5 p.m. Bring your German mug and listen to some music by Omaha’s very own Barry Boyce Polka Band.
The Crescent Moon will also be ringing in the New Year with their New Beers Eve party. There will be no cover charge, drink specials all day, $3 Long Islands and a champagne toast at midnight.
House of Loom
1012 S. 10th St.
After you have finished holiday dinner with your family, House of Loom will be presenting their James Brown Funky Xmas celebration from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. In honor of the King of Soul, Loom will be featuring James Brown hits, b-sides and remixes that will put you into a funky and nostalgic Christmas mood. There will be no cover charge and they will serve $1.50 Miller High Life.
House of Loom will host an event every day of the week after Christmas, leading up to New Year’s Eve. Loom’s festivities on Dec. 31 will start at 8 p.m. and feature a Midwinter Night’s Dream party with DJs Brent Crampton and Buzz Junior. The Waiting Room Lounge

The Waiting Room will be pulling out all the stops this year with their Enchantment Under The Sea New Year’s Eve Dance. Tickets, which will be $12, may be purchased online at etix.com. For a full list of events and live music at The Waiting Room, check out their Facebook page.
So when you’re out and about, looking for something do with your friends over winter break, just remember the plethora of options available to you. Whether you’re looking for an ugly Christmas sweater party, cheap drinks and food or trying to ring in the new year with some champagne, there is surely something to satisfy your need to celebrate the end of the semester.
