Volleyball moves to 4-1 in conference play

The Omaha Volleyball team moved to 4-1 in conference play Friday night earning their third sweep of the season beating Oral Roberts 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) and then falling to Denver 3-0 (21-25, 36-30, 14-25).

The Mavericks (9-9, 4-1) are now in second place in the Summit League behind Denver.

Omaha vs. Oral Roberts

The Mavs outhit ORU .261 to .125, and outblocked the Golden Eagles 10-3. Six of those blocks belonged to senior Michaela Schimmer. Sydney O’Shaughnessy led the team with 26 assists, and senior libero Kimberly Bailey had 15 digs to lead the team as well.

Amy Taylor led the team offensively with nine kills, .412 hitting, while fellow senior Kelley Wollak and sophomore Mackenzie Horkey had seven kills each.

The first two sets were tied late, however, the Mavs prevailed in both. The first set was tied 21-21 before Omaha’s coach Shires called a timeout that helped gain the momentum needed for the Mavs to rattle off four consecutive points and seal the win.

Thanks to some clutch kills and aces from the likes of Wollak, Horkey, senior Megan Schmale the Mavs took the second set. Finally the Mavs used a near flawless third set to get the match win and their third sweep of the season.

Omaha vs. Denver

Omaha was swept by Denver to end their conference winning streak. Wollak led the Mavericks with 9 kills. O’Shaughessy led the team with 26 assists and 18 digs, her 11th double-double.
Omaha was outhit .171 to .117 in the match.
