The perfect time for a good scare

Fall officially begins Sept. 21, and with changing weather comes Halloween and the opening of haunted houses around Omaha. Some houses not to miss this year include Shadow’s Edge, Mystery Manor and Scary Acres.

Shadow’s Edge is located in Mangelsen’s parking lot on 3457 S. 84th St. Admission is $10 and includes a walk-through of the house that lasts roughly 20 minutes. The house doesn’t disappoint. There’s something or someone lurking around every corner, waiting to give a good scare and hear a piercing scream. The house is dimly lit or, at times, not lit at all, so pay attention to the glowing arrows that guide the way. Any returning customers from last year will be pleased to know that the house isn’t the same.

“We always change the house inside and out but the big change this year is that we have added our outside area as part of the walk-through,” Scott Murphy, the owner of Shadow’s Edge, said. “In the past, people have waited in line back there. This year we are grouping people right off the front porch and sending them through the back as part of the haunt.”

The Shadow’s Edge is open on Fridays and Saturdays from dusk until 12:30 a.m. and on Sundays from dusk until 10:00 p.m. The house then opens every day in October with the same hours but with daily deals. Monday customers can get in two for the price of one, and Tuesday admission is half off.

Another house not to miss this season is Mystery Manor, located at 716 N. 18th St. Admission is $10 with the option of adding on the mystery fast pass for an additional $10, which allows you to skip to the front of the line. According to this house’s website, it’s actually haunted with paranormal activity and tours are available.

Mystery Manor has an underlying tone of fun apart from their scares. A spinning starred tunnel is unique to the house as well as the slide customers must go down to complete the walk-through.

Mystery Manor is open on weekends in September from dusk until midnight. In October, the house is open Sunday through Thursday from dusk to 10 p.m., Fridays from dusk until midnight and Saturdays from dusk until 1 a.m. For more information about paranormal tours at Mystery Manor, visit their website,

The last haunted house not to miss this season is Scary Acres, located on 17272 Giles Road. Scary Acres is more than just a house. For $25, customers get to go through “The Master’s Castle,” which is like a typical haunted house, but also “House on the Hill” and “The Haunted Woods.” Each of these activities can be bought individually.

Scary Acres also provides bonfires Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, along with concessions open every night. There’s someone creeping around every corner at this haunted acreage. This house is well worth the drive.

Scary Acres is open weekends in September from 7 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. In October, it’s open Sunday through Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
