A story about a girl named Katniss Everdeen is taking the fiction world by storm. “The Hunger Games” is the first book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, followed by “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay.”
The first book was released in September 2008. With 2.9 million copies in print, the book is a USA Today and New York Times best seller.
“The Hunger Games” is a story about a post-apocalyptic North America known as Panem. Panem is split into 12 districts with the Capitol being where the wealthy and powerful live. Each year, one female and one male aged 12 to 18 are chosen by lottery from each district to be entered into the Hunger Games. The contestants are dropped into an arena that contains a variety of weapons, supplies and traps. The children then must fight to the death and the one to survive is declared the winner.
The story is told through Katniss Everdeen, a gutsy 16-year-old girl from District 12. She is a powerful female protagonist who must make difficult decisions when it comes to love and death throughout the entire book. Collins does an excellent job of building tension and making her readers beg for more.
“Reading ‘The Hunger Games’ is as addictive (and as violently simple) as playing one of those shoot-it-if-it-moves videogames in the lobby of the local eightplex; you know it’s not real, but you keep plugging in quarters anyway,” Stephen King said in an Entertainment Weekly review.
The book is popular among all ages with its brutal life-or-death plot. More than 3,000 people have rated the book with five stars on Amazon.com. A lot of those reviewers are adults who have recommended the gripping book to their children or picked it up after their children have devoured it.
Lucky for fans of “The Hunger Games,” Lions Gate Entertainment has made the book into a film. Collins adapted the novel for film herself. The film, directed by Gary Ross, is set to release March 23, 2012. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. Lawrence received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role in “Winter’s Bone.”
“The Hunger Games” is the most anticipated film of 2012, a new poll conducted by MTV’s NextMovie.com suggests, topping the final installment of “The Twilight Saga.” The poll received a total of 1 million votes with “The Hunger Games” taking 51 percent of the vote. “The Twilight Saga” followed close behind with 45 percent of the vote.
