With dubstep music swarming the Midwest this past year, it is no surprise that Derek Vincent Smith, or Pretty Lights, upcoming show in Council Bluffs, IA is causing a big hype within the Omaha music scene. Pretty Lights will be playing at Westfair Amphitheater Saturday Aug. 25.
Dubstep can be described as a genre within a genre. Originating from electronic dance music (techno), dubstep is electronically derived but, unlike techno, centered almost completely on bass.
Pretty Lights is a dubstep producer from Colorado who is setting the standard for originality. Unlike most DJ’s, who mix a variety of tracks ranging from underground folk to top 40 hits, Pretty Lights mixes his original records. His music has been described as cutting edge and completely organic.
Pretty Lights has also recently expanded to form a record label called Pretty Lights Music (PLM). Smith now produces names like Paul Basic, Supervision, and Gramatik. Any music produced by PLM is offered free, but they do accept donations. You can get hundreds of free downloads at prettylightsmusic.com.
This will not be Smith’s first trip to the metro area. September of 2010 he played at Sokol Underground and tickets were only $20. With the recent rise in popularity of dubstep, it’s not shocking this time he will be coming back in style. The show is set to play at Westfair, which is more than triple the size of Sokol Underground. Tickets prices have more than doubled, starting at $44.
But, don’t think that means you won’t get your money’s worth. With his fast paced beats and catchy bass solos, Pretty Lights offers music people from all backgrounds can enjoy. The concert on the 25th is sure to be an experience unlike any other. Oh, and did I mention the lights?
One of the biggest staples of electronic music is the complex light displays. Pretty Lights will be no exception. Staying true to his name, he is sure to have a light expose worth the price of admission.
So if you’re looking for a new kind of concert experience, grab your glow sticks and head down to Westfair this Saturday. It is sure to be a show that will not leave you disappointed! Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com, prettylights.com and at the door.
