North Dakota State came to Omaha to face UNO in their final home series of the year with a nation-leading 13-game winning streak. After scoring late to earn a 7-4 victory on Friday, the Bison dominated UNO at Werner Park on Saturday 8-1 and 7-0.
Thirteen in a row became 14, then 15, then 16. In three games UNO had committed nine errors, collected just 14 hits, scored only five runs and allowed 17 earned runs.
But after looking overmatched against a future Summit League opponent, the Mavs recovered for a 9-1 win on Sunday. The UNO bats woke up to provide 13 hits and Redshirt freshman Zach Williamsen settled things down on the mound. NDSU hadn’t lost a game in over a month, a 6-5 defeat at Southern Illinois.
Senior Colby McCord went 2-for-4 while seniors Mark Waldron, Scotty Donner and junior Connor McCrite each went 2-for-5. Senior Brady Hohl led the way with four RBIs, McCrite drove in two and freshman Alex Mortensen scored two runs.
Williamsen (2-1) got the win after giving the Mavs seven strong innings on the mound. The Millard West grad allowed just one earned run on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Freshman Cole Volkers finished the final two innings with no hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Initially, it appeared things were setting up for another disappointing afternoon. Zach Wentz (1-2), the Bison starter, helped himself out with a solo homerun in the top of the first.
But Hohl led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and eventually came around to score. Hohl stole second, then scored when McCord singled up the middle.
Waldron singled through the left side to move McCord to second, then McCord scored on McCrite’s single to right. McCrite’s RBI gave UNO a 2-1 lead, their first of the weekend.
The Mavs added two more in the fourth on two hits to extend the lead to 4-1. Mortensen started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a hit by sophomore Ryan Tomlinson.
Senior Andrew Reck moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt, then Mortensen scored on Hohl’s sac fly to center. McCord walked to put runners at the corners and sophomore Caleb Palensky singled to center to score Tomlinson and make it 4-1.
Williamsen allowed just one hit the rest of the way while the Maverick offense continued to add runs.
In the seventh inning Hohl extended UNO’s lead to 7-1 on a bases loaded double to right-center.
Hohl’s double scored Reck, Mortensen and sophomore Cody Brown.
The next inning Waldron hit a double of his own and then scored off of a triple by McCrite to right center. Donner brought home McCrite on a single to left to make the final score 9-1.
The Mavs will have one more game in Omaha when they face Creighton at TD Ameritrade on May 9, the final game of the year. Before then they will go on the road for 13 straight.
The extended road trip starts this Friday in a three-game series at UNLV.
