Loessfest aims to put summer into full swing for the fifth annual year with live music, movies on the green and a variety of other free events. Just across the river in Council Bluffs, Loessfest will once again be hosting its main events in Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park over Memorial Day weekend.

Kicking off celebrations, KC and the Sunshine Band is scheduled to headline for Loessfest’s free opening concert. The performance will also feature opening special guest Bluffet, a tribute to Jimmy Buffet. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday, but the park opens at 4 p.m. so visitors are encouraged to come early to claim their spot on the “Great Lawn.”

Over the course of the weekend a series of different musical groups will showcase some of the region’s greatest artistic talent. These groups will include Omaha Symphony, Trent Harmon, Maiden Dixie and Bellies & Whistles.

Sunday evening will treat Loessfest guests to a firework show following a performance by the Omaha symphony. The show will take place over the park’s Great Lawn. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sprawl out over the park’s green.

Food and drink will be in strong supply for those looking to eat out. A variety of local food vendors will be present including Hog Stop BBQ, Hy-Vee Chinese, Dipping Dots and several others.

In addition to food being available for purchase, guests are permitted to bring their own food and drink to Loessfest. Coolers and large containers are allowed but will may be subject to searches. No alcohol may be brought into the park and may be confiscated if found.

Parking may become difficult considering the massive crowds Loessfest has pulled in the past. While much of parking directly next to Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park is likely to fill up fast, there is still plenty of space available on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River. A quick walk over the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge can lead guests straight from Omaha into the heart of Loessfest.

The full list of events and times at Loessfest can be found at their website.
