Why not enjoy a delicious pizza before an exciting hockey game? That is exactly what students did at the tailgate party hosted by the Freshman Leadership Council on Friday, Feb. 28 at Dudley’s Pizzeria and Tavern in Aksarben.

The tailgate party took place before the game against Colorado College at 7:37. The Maverick spirit bus transported students to the game from Dudley’s. The Freshman Leadership Council worked with University of Nebraska at Omaha athletics to create the event and encouraged students to come support student government and UNO during the hockey game.

The first 150 students were offered a free one topping pizza and a free T-shirt when they presented their mavcard. Students were seated in regular dining style and served by the staff at Dudley’s.

During the tailgate party, it started snowing, but this did not stop students from attending the event, socializing, and enjoying a tasty personal pizza.

UNO freshman Melanie Baumofer attended the event with Ashley Kaup, another UNO student. Although both girls were unable to attend the hockey game directly after the tailgate party, they planned on attending the game that following Saturday.

“I was excited for the event,” Baumofer said.

In the future, Baumofer and Kaup would enjoy seeing more events from the Leadership Council. They suggested an event in other places in Aksarben that would be convenient for students.

Blake Cherney, a member of the Freshman Leadership Council, was pleased with the turnout for the tailgating event.

“It was a great success,” Cherney said. “Many people showed up, and we exceeded our goal of 150 people.”

The Freshman Leadership Council consists of 15-20 freshman level students. FLC serves as the entry level to student government because the members get a chance to learn how student government works, and two members will be elected to serve on the SG- UNO Senate. They meet once a week under the leadership of the SG vice president.

Student government consists of the voices for UNO who represent through different Senate seats such as the Arts and Science Seats or the Pacific Campus Housing Seats. Student Government is now campaigning for UNO elections for the 2014- 2015 year. March 11 is Election Day, and the results will be announced at in the MBSC Fireplace Lounge, via email and social media.
