Massa fights mono to get chance on the ice

When you're a freshman goaltender new to the program, you can expect a few hurdles on your way to earning a start in net.  Often  you have to compete with a veteran starter who's been in goal for a season or two.

Mav Offense Falls Flat in Alaska Trip

UNO only managed to score one goal in two games and left the Brice Alaska Goal Rush with losses to Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks.  After failing to get a tying goal in the third period of last Saturday's loss to Colgate, the Mavs went over six periods before getting back on the scoreboard.

Aneloski Taking the Reins at the Blue Line

As the UNO hockey regular season commenced last weekend, several storylines came to the forefront.

Could the 10 freshmen additions to the roster have the same impact as last season?  How would the Mavs deal with the suspension of Alex Hudson?  Will John Faulkner develop some consistency with a lead, and on the second game of a weekend series?

Mavs Lose ‘Stampede’ Title for First Time Since 2006

Colgate scored two crucial late period goals and defeated UNO 4-3, claiming the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Championship.  The first line combination of Terry Broadhurst, Brock Montpetit and Matt White produced multiple points for the second night in a row, but it wasn't enough for the Mavs who fell to 1-1, after beating Mercyhurst Friday night.

Hockey Regular Season Begins Friday

Last season UNO was picked to finish eighth and ninth in two preseason conference polls, partly because of their youth and inexperience.

The Mavs had never skated in the ultra-competitive WCHA, and 10 of the teams' 25 members were freshmen, new to the college game.  Experience in the WCHA won't be an issue this season.

Hockey Opens with 4-1 Exhibition Win

It may not have been 6-1, but the chances were definitely there.  UNO hockey opened a second straight season with an exhibition against the University of British Columbia, this year winning 4-1.
