2013 Music Festival Guide

On Saturday, a small sliver of hope spread across the United States when Punxsutawney Phil, the nation's groundhog, emerged from his dwelling and didn't see his shadow, predicting that an early spring is upon us.
With the gloomy weather, hopefully, coming to an end, we've got the cure for your cabin fever.  Music festival season is slowly approaching, and with such a wide variety of options, no matter what your taste, there is sure to be a festival for you!
Enjoy the early spring weather with Big Gigantic and Pretty Lights in Colorado, or if you'd like to get farther away, three days of dancing in Miami. Whatever your wish, spring break is knocking on the door, and it's time to start planning. Line-ups for spring and summer music festivals are being announced from now until April, and tickets are going fast! Finding all of the necessary information can be, kind of, tricky, so here's what you need to know about some of the most anticipated festivals of the year.

James Freeman speaks on civil rights

International Studies and Programs presented James Freeman (director of multicultural affairs at UNO) for Conversational and Culture Hour on Jan. 24. CC hour is a weekly program that gives international students the opportunity to practice English and interact with Americans.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Mr. Freeman spoke about the Civil Rights movement and his personal experiences. In the MBSC Dodge room, there was a good crowd attending, with people of every different race, age and gender.
Freeman's experiences were captivating. Freeman was very happy to see so many diverse people at UNO.

Joslyn Art Museum hosts a special Valentine’s Day event

With Valentine's Day slowly creeping up, it would be wise for all of you procrastinators to start planning now.  Otherwise, you'll find yourself stuck waiting 30 minutes for a table at Applebee's.  Or, in a movie theatre sitting rows away from your date, because you got the only two seats left in the theatre.
This year, beat the crowds and woo your valentine with a not-so-typical night of romance.  The Joslyn Art Museum will be hosting a special night of food, cocktails and art on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 6pm.

Raising Cane’s opening Thursday

Over the past few months, there has been a lot of commotion in Omaha with the coming of the long awaited Chick-Fil-A.
But, on Jan. 31 some new chicken competition will hit the Omaha market.  Raising Cane's, a fast food joint that specializes in chicken strips, will open its doors on 72nd and Dodge.
The Omaha location will be the company's third Nebraska franchise, with the other two locations in Lincoln.

Speed Dialogue gives a safe haven for serious discussion

It seems as we go further into the 21st century, our desire for better means of communication is increasing rapidly.
Cell phones are designed around social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.  We are always seeking ways to make our computers faster.  People want to share every small detail of their lives, and they want to be able to do it instantaneously.
But, all too often, lost in the mix of Tweets, Instagrams and status updates, are the relevant and substantial topics.  For some, sharing intimate details about love lives is acceptable, but when it comes to discussing religion or politics, comfort zones are then breached.
Project Interfaith is an initiative in Omaha dedicated to providing a forum for open and respectful learning and interaction about identity, religion, belief and culture.  On Thursday, Jan. 31, Project Interfaith will host their fourth "Speed Dialogue" at the Urban Abbey on 10th and Jackson Streets.

UNO student plays bride at Journal Broadcast Group’s 2013 Bridal Fair

Although walking on stage to Justin Bieber's "As Long as You Love Me" was not my first choice, I was absolutely ecstatic to be part of the Journal Broadcast Group's 2013 Bridal Fair.
The Bridal Fair took place Jan. 6 at Centurylink Center. Everything wedding related was there to greet engaged couples, from Jone-Z Party buses to DJs and music for receptions. My duty, as well as the rest of the models from Image Modeling, who has been a part of the event since 2010, was to put on a fashion show to give all of the soon-to-be brides and grooms ideas for their special day.
