Hockey hands out annual awards
UNO senior Joey Martin was named the hockey team’s Most Valuable Player and Forward of the Year last week at the Mavs’ annual year-end awards function.
Martin led UNO in scoring with a career-high 35 points and tied for the team lead in assists with 24.
Martin and teammate Matt Ambroz shared the team’s Plus-Minus Award. Both seniors led the Mavs with a +19 rating.
The Defenseman of the Year award went to senior Eric Olimb, who led defensemen with a career-best 27 points.
Sophomore John Faulkner, who started all 39 games this season, was named Goaltender of Year. The Sarnia, Ontario native posted a career-high 20 wins this season in addition to posting a 2.56 goals-against average.
Freshmen Matt White and Brock Montpetit were named Co-Rookies of the Year. The two had a combined total of 25 goals and 46 points for UNO. Michael Young was named the Mavs’ Most Improved Player and Terry Broadhurst won the team’s Seventh Man Award.
Other Mavs receiving honors included Alex Simonson, who won the Mike Rehmeier Biggest Heart Award, and Nick Van Bokern, whose 3.5 grade point average earned him the team’s Student-Athlete of the Year award.
