Dear University of Nebraska student,
I can’t think of many more important people to write on my first day as president of the university than the 51,000 students who are the reason we do what we do. Serving as your president is the opportunity of a lifetime, and I want to say thank you for choosing the University of Nebraska and for the energy and talents you bring every day to the classroom, the laboratory and our community.
In preparing for my new role, I’ve had the opportunity to spend time on each of the campuses – UNO, UNK, UNL and UNMC – and with students in particular. If the students I’ve met are any indication, Nebraska’s future is in good hands. I am eager to meet many more of you in the weeks and months ahead, and to learn about your backgrounds, your career goals, and your ideas on how the univer-sity can do more to serve you. Providing you with an education that helps you discover your passion and prepares you to be successful is our most important priority and I welcome your comments on how we can improve.
I know firsthand the power of a college education. Growing up in rural Mississippi, I never dreamed I would have the opportunity to even go to college, much less be–come president of a major university. But I was fortunate to receive an excellent education that opened doors for me I never thought would be possible. My focus as president will be doing whatever I can to make sure education opens the same doors for you, and future generations of students.
Thank you again for helping to make the University of Nebraska the vibrant, diverse and well-regarded institution that it is. I hope our paths will cross soon, and in the meantime I invite you to follow me on Twitter at @hankbounds or contact me at president@nebraska. edu.
Best wishes on the rest of the spring semester.
Hank Bounds President, University of Nebraska
